The Pontiac Township High School held its second public open house Wednesday evening. The purpose was to demonstrate the needs of the High School, and why they are asking for their referendum.
District 90's Superintendent Leo Johnson, other school administrators, and members of the PTHS School Board lead tour groups around the facilities, so people could see first-hand what the aging building needs are, and how the school plans to utilize the referendum funds.
Projects for 2010 include upgrading and replacing the current HVAC system. The 45 year old system has outlived its expected life, and is currently only working at approximately 45% efficiency, according to the PTHS Referendum Committee information.
The system would be replaced by a Geothermal System, which would run at 90% efficiency; saving the district money in maintenance and operating costs.
All classrooms were upgraded in 2009 to have more efficient lighting. However, additional lighting upgrades are also needed throughout the rest of the facilities.
PTHS has liability issues with the bleachers on the west side of Williamson Field, according to referendum documentation. The referendum would allow the high school to replace the bleachers, and be compliant with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements.
The open house included several displays from school departments, classes, and programs. These included FFA, Band/Music, and Athletics.
The projects to be funded by the referendum are expected to cost $8.9 million. The improvements are estimated to save the district around $880,000 per year in deferred maintenance and energy savings.
The High School District 90 is asking for 25-cents per $100 EAV. The question is on the February 2nd ballot.
